The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Interaction Design

You’ll be relieved to hear that, for the sake of time, I do not intend to closely examine each of the Von Trapp children. To their relief too, I imagine.

But to run over them quickly, we have:

  • Liesl (16), who is about to become a woman. She’s thresholds obviously.
  • Frederick (14) wants to become a man. Ah, the act of manufacture. He is the production line.
  • Louisa (13). Says Maria: “Louisa I don’t know about… but someone has to find out about her.” Or maybe not! That’s because Louisa is the concept of the taboo (tapu, actually).
  • Kurt (11) pretends he’s tough. Kurt is sports.
  • Brigitta (10) notices everything. She’s observation and the scientific method.
  • Marta (7) would like a pink parasol. Parasols are for display and for sharing. She is friendship.
  • Gretl (5) has a hurt finger. It got caught in Frederick’s teeth, she tells Maria. What a tattletale! Gretl is storytelling.
