Image: Drawing of the Metal Phone machine (one frame from an animation).

So what we created was a way to witness the change. There’s a glass vending machine we built to watch it happen. The phone is clamped in the top and the metal melts off under hot air. It drops into a funnel which is closed by a tap. The guts of the phone are put into a mould at the bottom of the machine, the tap is opened, and the phone is re-formed and set using cold water. It’s quite a process to observe, and takes about six minutes.
