Escalante
I can explain it best with this quotation. I’ve shown this slide too much recently, I’m sure, but I agree with it so much. It’s from my business partner Jack Schulze. I want to read it out.
He says, “Some people (they are wrong)” – Jack can speak in parentheses – “Some people (they are wrong) say design is about solving problems. Obviously designers do solve problems, but then so do dentists. Design is about cultural invention.”
What Schulze says is that design has invent, has to create new ways of doing things, and to contribute to culture.
Design is a combination of the rational and the intuitive, the sensible and the playful, and to invent, to contribute to the world of which we’re all a part, you need the both. I’m as guilty as anyone of putting forward rules and rational ideas, so I want to have more of an exploratory touch today. Like a hike. We’ll see where we end up.
