Image: Here & There, a horizonless projection in Manhattan.

This is the product, by the way. It’s not even a smart product, all plastic full of electronics, and it’s still hard, right? It’s a map of Manhattan with a new kind of map projection which attempts to show you a whole map of the city and also where you are all at once.

So this is the top half of the map, and it’s showing uptown. And then as you look down the map…

[At this point the map slowly pans down until the elevated buildings are visible.]

...the city kind of bends up towards you, and you see the buildings exactly as you would see them standing on the street. Right outside the Cooper Union, there you are standing there at the bottom.

It’s a projection called “Here & There,” and it amazes me that a small group of people can do this, can have a 3D electronic model of all of Manhattan to bend and play around with. We haven’t quite got used to our new scope yet, our new muscles, as a community. We haven’t quite understood how much we can do just be outsourcing everything we’re not passionate about.
