In fact, you can probably trace the beginning of this shift back to this man, Doug Engelbart, the inventor of the personal computer.
In a single 90 minute live demonstration, Engelbart walked through a demonstration of their brand new computer system. He showed off, for the first time, hypertext and hyperlinks, which is what the World Wide Web is, video conferencing, which is what Skype is, and document outlines.
