Botworld
Here is another film I loved as a kid.
This is WarGames.
It also had a talking computer in it, called Joshua.
I spoke in a computer voice: “Greetings Professor Falcon.”
And you may think that’s the reason I liked the film.
But actually it’s not.
I found this out only when I watched it recently, and I realised it was because my 10 year-old self had a massive crush on Ally Sheedy.
So I grew up with artificial intelligences.
I mean, I encountered them a lot in movies. I don’t mean like the Jungle Book.
And now I’m a designer.
Or at least… I run a design studio. I’m not a designer. I studied physics. I got into computers when I was 20 because I had a spiritual experience when I found out how transistors worked.
So because I do this design thing, and because of my lack of design background, I hunt around for definitions of what design is.
My favourite was said by Jack Schulze, one of the principals at BERG, my company, and this is what he said.
