...and this is Cedric Price’s walking city.

Actually it’s the aviary at London Zoo, and it doesn’t walk although it looks like it should!

Price built another aviary which did walk. The problem with aviaries is that you can’t let the birds out in order to repair them, and the birds kind of muck up the ground underneath. So Price built an aviary for a fellow with really expensive birds and lots of land, and the building would mechanically walk over the land, moved literally by the bird inside it, and so it would move slowly without scared the birds, and let the land repair underneath it. And I think this was built in 1981.

I love these things that feel like they should be science fiction but are actually real.
